5 Practical Advice on Keeping the Value of Your Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood floorings evoke elegance and flair to any kind of home. They're additionally long lasting, which makes them an effective financial investment for any property owner. Hardwood floors coverings are also considered as the strongest flooring material among others, so it's definitely an excellent investment for homeowners. Moreover, they also make the home a protected area for families to inhabit as they don't carry any sort of toxins or irritants identified in the majority of synthetic floorings. If you prefer yours to last for many years, you have to suitably sustain them. Here's exactly how you can make that materialize:

Sweep and Wipe Frequently

Over time, hardwood floor coverings accumulates muck, sand, and grit which could potentially ruin the surface of your floor covering as they act as a sand paper, scratching away the preventive layers and covering of your floor. In this situation, it's good to sweep regularly using a microfiber dusting pad to remove undesirable filth. Setting a cloth by the front doorway for people to clean their feet or footwear before entering the house is also a good strategy to keep hardwood away from these possibly damaging flecks.

Wipe Spills Immediately

Practically, every floor covering product-- if you accidentally spilled something on it and refuse to wipe it right away-- can have its finish damaged completely. Hardwood floors coverings are no exception to this, that's the reason it's often great to clean water or other spills right away to protect against permanent staining as well as damage.

Prevent Utilizing Hard Cleaning Solutions

Keep clear of oil soaps and other powerful washing solutions as they can cause your hardwood flooring to permanently discolor. Using these compounds could also make complications when it's time for you to place maintenance wax or protective layer on the floor. Go with cleaners with neutral pH, those that are especially made for hardwood floorings, to maintain their luster and classy style.

Avoid Dragging Furnishings

If you're replacing your furnishings in your living area, try lifting items instead of dragging them as doing this can scuff and nick the surface of your hardwood Tampa homeowners also have. You wouldn't desire to completely damage your floor covering investment, would you? Ensure that you place felt under home furniture legs and drag them throughout your chosen location or better yet, lift furnishings if you can.

Safeguard Hardwood from the Sunshine

Intense exposure of Tampa hardwood flooring to UV rays can easily cause it to decline and tarnish overtime. To avoid this, make sure to put up drapes, blinds, or sheer drapes on your windows or other entry ways to guard it from the harsh sun and maintain its value. Protect Utah's outdoors economy | The Salt Lake Tribune

With the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City this week, it is a good time to reflect on what we have and how to protect it.

World class recreational opportunities are found throughout Utah, Colorado and Wyoming, a region that boasts one of the most successful recreation economies in the country, thanks to several national parks and iconic landscapes such as the San Rafael Swell, the Dirty Devil River and Desolation Canyon.

For decades these fantastic natural areas, which include world-famous paddling, rock climbing, mountain biking, canyoneering and hiking, have reliably attracted tourists to our hometown of Moab.

These unique recreation opportunities also attract permanent residents, resulting in an increased tax base for our town that has helped fund a new hospital, pool, library and school in the last five years alone. Our community depends on these regional recreational assets to protect our local economy and quality of life.

As longtime Utah rock-climbing and mountain-biking guides and advocates we understand the direct connection between land conservation and the economy. Unfortunately, this golden goose is threatened by numerous industrial development proposals.

A recent Bureau of Land Management plan considers whether 2.4 million acres in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming should be leased for experimental oil shale and tar sands development.

Because we want a sustainable and healthy economy for our families and businesses, we support the BLM?s Alternative 3, which appropriately recognizes the need for significant additional research and takes a precautionary approach toward the expansion of unproven industrial developments that have the potential to permanently degrade the economy and landscape of southeastern Utah.

Oil shale and tar sands development is one of the dirtiest ways to produce energy, so why would we want to threaten the growing and sustainable recreation economy that contributes $5.8 billion annually to Utah?s economy, supports 65,000 jobs across the state, and generates nearly $300 million in annual state tax revenues?

A recent Outdoor Industry Association study shows that as the national economy slumped, the outdoor recreation industry grew, driving $646 billion in annual spending and supporting 6.1 million domestic jobs.

In Grand County, more than 70 percent of all jobs are created by sustainable recreation and service-related businesses. Regional economic reports show that public lands in places like Grand County have directly and consistently supported wage and job growth over the last 20 years.

story continues below

More than one-third of households in our county have a member that works in a business related to public lands recreation, and nearly two-thirds of local residents indicate that public lands are "extremely important" to their business.

Meanwhile, due to technological developments that reduce the need for employees, the share of residents employed in the mining industry has fallen like a rock and is stuck at 2-3 percent of Grand County?s total employment.

We support the Outdoor Alliance ? a coalition of national human-powered recreation groups ? who also advocate that before the BLM permits any commercial leases for experimental oil shale or tar sands development, more research must demonstrate that these proposed developments do not permanently harm the irreplaceable resources that currently support Utah?s growing and sustainable recreation economy.

While energy resources can be developed in a measured and responsible fashion, we must carefully balance other values and uses of public lands that are vital to our local businesses and quality of life. Let?s make sure our goose keeps laying golden eggs.

Jason Keith is with the Access Fund, which supports and represents more than 2.3 million climbers nationwide. He lives in Moab. Ashley Korenblat is a member of the International Mountain Bicycling Association and owner of Western Spirit Cycling in Moab.

Local bodybuilders take center stage at War Memorial ...

The fitness craze sweeping across America was on display at Fort Lauderdale?s War Memorial Auditorium recently for the 32nd annual Southern States Fitness, Figure, Bikini, Physique & Bodybuilding Championships.

Thousands of enthusiastic spectators witnessed over 200 of the nation?s top amateurs competing in a variety of events at the largest regional national qualifier in the eastern United States. The two-day event featured competitors from adults to teenagers from 18 different states, plus Puerto Rico.

Many local athletes were on hand and eager to perform on stage. Gerry Garcia, of Sunrise, competed in the Men?s Over 40 bodybuilding heavyweight division. The 42-year-old has been in bodybuilding for 15 years and, once he saw the improvement, it became part of his lifestyle.

?I put on about 13 pounds of muscle this year and my body fat is at three percent,? Garcia said. ?I?ve been dieting and training for 16 weeks and I just finished a couple of doughnuts and will go out with my family to have a beer and wings. This competition is such a challenge and the strides I made have given me tremendous fuel for next year.?

Adriana and Jorge Valero, of Tamarac, made the championships a family affair. Adriana took first place in the Women?s Open Bikini Over 40 Division.

?I came down from FSU [Florida State University] and saw what great shape my mom was in, so I thought I would give it a try,? Jorge said. ?I knew she would win, and I?m very proud of her.?

National Physique Committee (NPC) Southern States promoter Peter Potter, a resident of Fort Lauderdale, has witnessed an extraordinary progression in the sport.

?We started out 32 years ago with just men?s bodybuilding and we added many new categories creating mass appeal among the public,? Potter said. ?What started out as just a men?s event is being taken over by the women, with the addition of fitness, physique and bikini competitions.?

Special guests and eight-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney and eight-time Ms. Olympia Lenda Murray were on hand to promote the sport and the event.

?I love the way this sport has evolved and impacted every segment of society,? Haney said. ?Now you have cross training and weight training in every sport and from middle school kids to senior citizens. Weight training has enjoyed a huge impact and the transformation has gone main stream. I?m fortunate to be part of it.?

Motivation To Keep Fit With Pure Beauty | Health Tips, Fitness ...

Advertorial

So you?ve made the commitment to be healthy and have actively started working out ? how do you stay motivated?

Well it?s time to BANISH all excuses and FOCUS on the things that will get you to the gym and make you wanna sweat! The secret to staying on track with your goal is not just about being motivated, but to be INTRINSICALLY MOTIVATED.

When you?re intrinsically motivated, you are self-motivated to being physically active because you truly enjoy it. An extrinsically motivated person would work out even when they have no desire to just because they want the reward; i.e. to lose weight, look good or to please a significant other (a combination of all the above is probably the most rewarding for some). Sound familiar?

Now, working out for rewards is totally effective for short-term goals but that?s not enough to keep you motivated in the long run!

It?s just like difference interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you only do it when circumstances permit. When you're committed to something, you give no excuses, only results.

My inner motivation is that fresh feeling of rejuvenation after a workout. More sweat now means less jiggle later. See, good habits are as addictive as bad habits, only a lot more rewarding! Gaining confidence is definitely one of it.

You don?t need to be confident to begin exercise; you just need to want confidence

And what do I know about confidence? Confidence comes from overcoming challenges. So start with the first step ? whether it's jogging, running, cycling or lifting weights. Challenge yourself to find what makes you sweat the most. You don?t need to be confident to begin exercise; you just need to want confidence :)

Speaking of confidence, I just got to know about a skincare line from Korea called Pure Beauty. The Pomegranate Antioxidant Skincare range definitely appealed to me when I first heard about it because it is specifically tailored for Asian skin. Using mostly pomegranate extract, a fruit that contains high levels of Vitamin C, the quality of the Pomegranate Antioxidant Skincare range is ideal for brightening, firming, anti-aging, energizing and soften the skin.

From left to right: Pomegranate Antioxidant Facial Mask, Treatment Essence, 2-in-1 Foam Cleanser, Toner, Eye Cream and Eye Mask.

I got a few items from the skincare range to try out. Thanks Pure Beauty!

So now, time for a beauty review!

Wake up to brighter eyes!

I tried the Pomegranate Antioxidant Eye Mask for the first time in the morning and I was pleased with the outcome! The cooling eye mask helped to reduce puffiness and turned out to be instant pick-me-up. So refreshing!

To fully benefit from using the Eye Mask, try the Pomegranate Antioxidant Eye Cream. Its soothing properties consist of nourishing natural ingredients that works to hydrate and invigorate the eye area while helping to reduce dark circles and puffiness.

Use this daily at night!

There?s also the Pomegranate Antioxidate Facial Mask. I love it because you can wear in the morning to feel refreshed, or in the evening to wind down.

What makes this 2-in-1 Foam Cleanser a winning product is that it cleans and also doubles up as a mask. It contains a natural complex of fruit and herbal extracts that gently de-stresses skin, unclogs pores and detoxifies to leave skin energized and refreshed.

Use it as a cleanser, or wear it as a mask (for approx. 5 minutes) to unclog pores and reveal a cleaner skin!

To close the pores and keep skin healthy and conditioned, use a toner.

The Pomegranate Antioxidant Toner is made with natural herbal complex that blends with pomegranate oil with oriental herb extracts. Your skin will benefit from its superb anti-oxidizing capabilities that purify skin and reverse signs of aging and fatigue.

Makes your skin feel baby soft!

Reveal a more radiant and supple youthful skin with the Pomegranate Antioxidant Essence. This one comes in a small 30ml bottle but you?ll only need a small amount to feel the difference on your skin. Skin feels soft and velvety. It is made from mulberry root, rice, green tea and pomegranate oil to help your skin cells regenerate faster while detoxifying and reversing the signs of aging.

STAND A CHANCE TO WIN A PURE BEAUTY TRIAL PACK!

I have 3 Pomegranate Antioxidant Skincare Gift Sets to giveaway by 31 July 2012! All you have to do is list 5 Motivating Factors on why you like to keep fit! The 3 most creative list wins. Send your answers directly to my mailbox fh@withlovefay.com

Good luck!

CSN: Santo's legend will live at Cooperstown

ST. LOUIS ? Before Ron Santo and Billy Williams had their statues facing each other at Sheffield and Addison, they were side-by-side at Double-A ball.

This was San Antonio in 1959 and Williams remembered Rogers Hornsby, a roving Cubs instructor, going down the line after watching workouts near the end of the season.? ?

?He looked at some of the guys and said, ?Listen, you better go get a job because you can?t play this game of baseball,?? Williams recalled. ?He started to get to us and we didn?t know what he was going to say.

?He goes: ?William, you can hit in Chicago. You can hit right now in Wrigley Field and we want you to work on your defense. Santo, you?re a good defensive ballplayer and you?re going to hit some home runs. Both of you guys are going to be in the big leagues pretty soon.?? ?

Hornsby must have had a pretty good eye for talent, but there?s no way he could have known that both players would ultimately join him in the Hall of Fame.

As part of the ?Golden Era? committee, Williams lobbied for his old friend last December, and secured the spot in Cooperstown, almost exactly a year after Santo died from bladder cancer.

After years of frustration and disappointment, the induction takes place on Sunday in upstate New York, and there?s no doubt which hat Santo will have on his plaque.

?I don?t know if the world?s ever seen a guy with more passion and care and love for a franchise,? said former Cubs general manager Jim Hendry. ?Loved the players. Loved the fans. Loved the city. And gave his whole life ? through thick and thin, through good health and obviously horrible health the last decade ? to the organization.?

Santo wound up hitting 342 home runs, and winning five Gold Gloves at third base. He never ran with the sabermetrics crowd, but he did finish among the league leaders in walks nine times during his 15 years in the big leagues.

But numbers don?t tell the story of Santo, not even the more than $60 million he raised for juvenile diabetes research, because that doesn?t even begin to account for all the sick kids and amputees he quietly found time for across the country. ?

Traveling secretary Jimmy Bank is in his 20th season with the Cubs. Santo had two legs when Bank took the job, lost them both fighting diabetes and to the end pushed to make as many trips as possible.??? ?

?Heart of gold,? Bank said. ?Every hotel, everywhere we went, he stopped and signed autographs. I even asked him a couple times: ?Ronnie, don?t sign in the lobby, because then we?ve got security issues with the players.??

Santo would raise his voice: ?These are our fans! I?m gonna sign!?

In good times and bad times, Santo became such a huge part of the Cubs brand, as the voice on WGN Radio for 21 seasons. Hendry, Bank and TV play-by-play man Len Kasper all essentially said the same thing: I think about him all the time.

?When I got the job, he called and told me how excited he was for me,? Kasper said. ?He basically said: ?You?re a Cub now.? And that?s kind of how he viewed the world. Once I was a Cub in his mind, I was in.?

Santo didn?t need to memorize the game notes. Pat Hughes, a great straight man with such a smooth voice, was there for that.

Santo was the one connected in the manager?s office and the clubhouse. The players saw what he went through, hobbling to get on charter planes and refusing to complain during the brutal travel schedule.?? ?

?He was real, man. He was truly passionate about baseball and the Chicago Cubs,? outfielder Reed Johnson said. ?The players really bought into that, (and) that?s why he got so much respect, especially from guys in the clubhouse.?

Johnson remembered the call when the Cubs clinched the division in 2008: ?You could just hear him in the background on the radio going: ?Yeeeeesssss! Yeeeeesssss!??

On some level, even if you never met Santo, you still knew him if you just listened on the radio, and that connected generations of Cubs fans.

?He was as himself on the air as he was off the air,? Kasper said. ?That is what I think most broadcasters strive to be, but we all hold something back, under the guise of professionalism or whatever.

?But I think in a pure sense of what people want ? especially Cub fans and people in the Midwest ? they want you to be genuine. They want you to be unvarnished and unfiltered and Ron brought that every single day.

?If there was a player he had never heard of, he would tell everybody on the air, and there was something very charming about that.?

Bank had lunch with some friends on Saturday in St. Louis and they started telling Santo stories. It doesn?t really matter what?s going on in Cooperstown. As Bank said: ?There are things in every city that remind me of him.?

After Santo died in 2010, Bank got phone calls from bus drivers in a few cities, including the one the Cubs have had for years in St. Louis.

?They used to hear us on the buses laughing and having fun and talking,? Bank said. ?They called me (to say) we?re really gonna miss (you guys) on the buses.? ?

That was the kind of magnetism at the core of Santo?s personality. Friends, strangers, it didn?t really matter. They gathered to watch him play with maximum effort and listen to him moan and groan and cheer on the radio.

That?s why so many will be there in Cooperstown, as the Hall of Fame recognizes what the Cubs already knew a long time ago.

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera homered twice, reaching the 300 mark for his career and helping the Detroit Tigers finish a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 6-4 victory Sunday.

Detroit wrapped up a 6-1 homestand against the White Sox and Los Angeles Angels and now leads the AL Central by 1 1/2 games over Chicago. The White Sox have lost five straight.

Cabrera became the second Venezuela-born player to reach 300 home runs. Andres Galarraga hit 399.

Quintin Berry and Brennan Boesch also homered for Detroit to help rookie Jacob Turner (1-1) earn his first career win. Four relievers pitched for the Tigers, with Joaquin Benoit working a perfect ninth for his second save of the year.

Philip Humber (4-5) allowed six runs in three innings. Alex Rios and Kevin Youkilis homered for the White Sox.

The Tigers have won 16 of 21.

Turner, Detroit's rookie right-hander, bounced back after giving up seven runs in two innings in his last start against the Angels. He went 5 1-3 innings, allowing three runs and seven hits. He struck out three without a walk before being lifted after Rios hit a two-run homer in the sixth.

By then, Cabrera and the Detroit offense had already provided plenty of support. After an RBI single in the top of the first by Rios, the Tigers scored three runs in the bottom half before Humber retired a batter. Berry's two-run homer gave Detroit the lead, and Cabrera followed with a high drive that cleared the fence just to the left of center field.

Cabrera's second homer was even longer, off the ivy beyond center. A Tigers spokesman, citing ESPN Stats and Info, said it was estimated at 457 feet.

It was Cabrera's 23rd homer of the year, and he became the 14th player to reach 300 before turning 30, according to STATS, LLC. Cabrera was 29 years, 95 days old Sunday. When Hank Aaron was that age, he had 309 home runs, according to STATS. Barry Bonds had 222 by that age.

Boesch added a two-run shot later in the third to make it 6-1. Humber allowed seven hits and a walk with no strikeouts. He's 3-5 with a 7.55 ERA since pitching a perfect game at Seattle on April 21.

The White Sox chipped away after Humber was taken out. Rios' hit was ruled a homer after umpires consulted replay footage, and Youkilis hit a solo shot off Phil Coke in the seventh.

Octavio Dotel, the third Detroit reliever, came on with one out and a man on in the seventh and retired all five hitters he faced, with four strikeouts.

The White Sox were swept in a series for the first time all season.

NOTES: Coke was pitching for the first time since his wife gave birth to a baby girl. Mickenzie LouAnn was born Saturday morning. ... The Tigers could afford to go deep into their bullpen with an off day coming up Monday. Chicago hosts Minnesota, with RHP Gavin Floyd (7-8) returning from a problem with his throwing elbow to start against Minnesota LHP Francisco Liriano (3-9).

People might be buying on-line and searching for to Internet shops however in turn they?re also wanting them to give a real high, superior knowledge of buying a goods, which is supportive to a high level of customer support. There are a variety of methods by which a call center may improve its customer service and earn revenue and goodwill both hand-in-hand. It?s very acknowledged today by everyone that an of inbound call center is altogether very important, without an of these inbound call center experts, one can not be prepared to acquire the prospects of flourishing business. It?s very much expected that in the coming times, ?Help Desk? and ?Answering Service? could be called in a very much frequent method by the customers, because of the over growing demand of call center and also the so-known great customer assistance at these call centers, which a get while sitting at home. What is most significantly required in for a customer solutions at a center is Efficiency by the agencies. It?s a key for drawing customers towards the business. A pet peeve for the customers is usually on the situation that the BPO agencies are not responsive. It could this as grounds that they are holding the phone lines for long before they are received which makes the buyer thinks obnoxious and out of interest. It may also have this reason also, that the agents aren?t able to answer the clients query and resolve their problem when they call. Things worsen when the call will be transferred to other broker who has as the past one the same knowledge bank. Then the question of a client remains unanswered and unresolved. This also lends an adverse effect of that manufacturer who is not able to solve the dilemma while supplying products. The treatment to solve this trouble could be to streamline the call center services process. The BPO professionals must plan a job of predicting what kind of call volume they expect at certain timings of a time. With this knowledge at your fingertips, they would be able to plan the brokers? shift timings appropriately. By putting the best agents on the peak hours of callers? timings, would be beneficial as they would be able to up optimum calls at an occasion. These agents must also be given by their superiors with enough strength to do their work without obtaining the need to check. All this might definitely help in raising up the level of customer support.

Colorful science sheds light on solar heating

Friday, July 20, 2012

A crucial, and often underappreciated, facet of science lies in deciding how to turn the raw numbers of data into useful, understandable information ? often through graphs and images. Such visualization techniques are needed for everything from making a map of planetary orbits based on nightly measurements of where they are in the sky to colorizing normally invisible light such as X-rays to produce "images" of the sun.

More information, of course, requires more complex visualizations and occasionally such images are not just informative, but beautiful too.

Such is the case with a new technique created by Nicholeen Viall, a solar scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. She creates images of the sun reminiscent of Van Gogh, with broad strokes of bright color splashed across a yellow background. But it's science, not art. The color of each pixel contains a wealth of information about the 12-hour history of cooling and heating at that particular spot on the sun. That heat history holds clues to the mechanisms that drive the temperature and movements of the sun's atmosphere, or corona.

"We don't understand why the corona is so hot," says Viall who wrote about this technique and her conclusions about the corona in a paper that appeared in The Astrophysical Journal. "The corona is 1,000 times hotter than the sun's surface, when we would expect it to get cooler as the atmosphere gets further away from the hot sun, the same way the air gets cooler further away from a fire."

Scientists generally agree that energy in the roiling magnetic fields of the sun must transfer energy and heat up into the atmosphere, but the exact details of that process are still debated. Viall created her technique to see if she could distinguish between theories that describe coronal heating as uniform over time, versus those that say it comes from numerous nanoflares on the sun's surface.

To look at the corona from a fresh perspective, Viall created a new kind of picture, making use of the high resolution provided by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). SDO's Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) provides images of the sun in 10 different wavelengths, each approximately corresponding to a single temperature of material. Therefore, when one looks at the wavelength of 171 Angstroms, for example, one sees all the material in the sun's atmosphere that is a million degrees Kelvin. By looking at an area of the sun in different wavelengths, one can get a sense of how different swaths of material change temperature. If an area seems bright in a wavelength at shows a hotter temperature an hour before it becomes bright in a wavelength that shows a cooler temperature, one can gather information about how that region has changed over time.

To study such temperature changes, many scientists focus on analyzing a specific subset of solar material, such as giant arcs of charged particles that leap up off the sun's surface called coronal loops. Scientists gather information about the loops by comparing nearly simultaneous images of the sun in different wavelengths. Analysis of the loops in each image requires time-consuming, manual analysis to subtract the background observations away from the loops themselves, a process which is also inherently subject to human judgment and bias. In addition, each individual image represents light from only a narrow range of wavelengths, representing material at a narrow range of temperatures.

Viall wanted to look at as much of the solar material in a given area of the corona as she could, incorporating information about a variety of temperatures simultaneously. She also wanted to avoid the subjective process of subtracting out the background. Instead, she decided to look at all light coming from a given spot on the sun at the same time. That meant coming up with a visualization technique to convey all that information at once -- and thus her Van Gogh-like images were born.

For an interesting spot on the sun, Viall examines six channels over an entire 12-hour stretch. She compares each channel to the other channels in turn, assigning it a red, orange, or yellow color if the area has cooled, and assigning it a blue or green color if the area has heated up. She assigns the exact shade of the color based on how much time it took for the temperature change to occur.

"In essence, I'm measuring the time lag of how long it takes a given area to heat up or cool down," says Viall. "But it's totally automated, with no need for humans to make a decision about what to incorporate or ignore. And all of the solar material is represented statistically, not just one wavelength of light."

Viall's images show a wealth of reds, oranges, and yellow, meaning that over a 12-hour period the material appear to be cooling. Obviously there must have been heating in the process as well, since the corona isn't on a one-way temperature slide down to zero degrees. Any kind of steady heating throughout the corona would have shown up in Viall's images, so she concludes that the heating must be quick and impulsive ? so fast that it doesn't show up in her images. This lends credence to those theories that say numerous nanobursts of energy help heat the corona.

Customer Service: How One Bad Experience Can Ruin Your Business

Last updated 21 hours ago

Sometimes even the companies praised for their continuous level of exemplary customer service can have a bad day.?

But that one bad day can cost them.

?

You may believe your company is exempt. You may believe that a friendly "hello" is all the customer service you need to provide to your clients. You may believe that no one will ever know if, on an off day, one of your employees or you mistreat a customer. And you would be gravely mistaken.?

?

When it comes to business survival, customer service has always played an integral role to business success. And today, if your business isn't laser-focused on customer service you'll find yourself floundering to find success.

Why you may wonder has customer service become so important to business success??

?

  • 70% of Americans are willing to spend an average of 13% more with companies they believe provide excellent customer service
  • 60% believe that businesses have not increased their focus on providing good customer service and among this group 25% actually think companies are paying less attention to service
  • 78% of consumers have bailed on a transaction or not made an intended purchase because of poor customer service
  • 59% will try a new brand or company for a better customer service experience

?

In addition to being able to steal customers away from the competition and getting existing customers to spend more money with you, let's look at some of the possible ramifications of NOT consistently providing exceptional customer service.

If you've ever read anything else I write about customer service, you'll know I'm a huge fan of Starbucks - and not just for their coffee but for their personalized customer service. Honestly, I can get coffee I like just as much at McDonald's but I don't. And here's why. I'm willing to pay more money for a cup of coffee at Starbucks not because I think the quality of the coffee is necessarily better (because honestly I add so much to my coffee it doesn't taste much like coffee anyways) but because the quality of service is SIGNIFICANTLY better. They smile, they engage, they actually look me in the eye and my favorite is that as a repeat customer they learn my name and my drink order. Talk about personalized service - who doesn't love that. At McDonald's - well, I'm lucky if I get even a remote hint of friendliness. But, as much as I praise and have praised Starbucks exceptional customer service even they are not without fault.?

?

Last week, due to an issue with their mobile app card reload feature, my bank account had enough pending transactions from Starbucks that it overdrafted my acount and froze all my money. In a panic, I called both my bank and Starbucks' customer service department. My bank said they would file a claim but they needed someone from Starbucks to call them to rush the process. I had 2 conversations with Starbucks' customer service department employees - neither conversation yielded that exemplary customer service I am so accustomed to with Starbucks. Instead of sympathy or empathy with the fact that their mobile app was going to cause me to have zero money for the next few days, all I received was a very curt "sorry, there's nothing we can do." Certainly not what you want to hear from a company who has tied all your money up and left you stranded with no funds for 3-5 days. Honestly, it wasn't the fact that they couldn't do anything that bothered me, it was the company's lack of ownership in the problem and the poor customer service. Even if they couldn't do anything, compassion goes a long way. I didn't even feel that either of these employees cared that their company was putting me in a bad situation. As a result, I made my voice heard through social media.?

?

Here's why this matters to you. Even for customers who have loyalty to your business, one bad experience may serious taint your business in their eyes. Ten years ago perhaps this did not matter as much since the impact was confined to their own personal circle of friends and family. With the Internet and social media, that would bad experience can spread virally across the web and you could end up with a disaster that taints your reputation for years to come.?

?

To put things in perspective, my broadcast of my situation on the Starbucks Facebook fan page certainly grabbed their attention as well as some of my friends and even those I don't know. But it wasn't truly damaging to their reputation. However, let's look at United Breaks Guitars - a lovely song that was written and broadcast via YouTube after United Airlines broke Dave Carroll's Taylor guitar and refused to take any part in acknowledging the situation or resolving it. Want to talk about the damage one bad experience can have - this YouTube video has over 12 MILLION views. Think that hasn't hurt United Airlines business? All because of ONE bad customer experience.

One bad customer experience can spread like wildfire across the Internet these days. Ten years ago you only had to worry about that person sharing their negative experience with close friends and family. Now they can share it with the world. And if they have a reach like ?Dave Carroll, you better watch out!

I'll conclude with the following quote from Jim Bush, Executive Vice President, World Service at American Express, who says:

?Getting service right is more than just a nice to do; it?s a must do.? American consumers are willing to spend more with companies that provide outstanding service? Ultimately, great service can drive sales and customer loyalty.?

Asphalt shingles have long been one of the most popular residential roof covering products in America, and the locals of Northern Virginia, Fairfax and Sterling, towns which are famed for their relative wealth, favor these too. They are fairly affordable, effortless to set up, and call for incredibly little routine maintenance; 3 qualities that any homeowner would prefer in a roof covering material. Furthermore, they are cheap to produce, that's why about a dozen significant American construction product producers industry them, consisting of the CertainTeed Company.

Northern Virginia home owners can choose between two kinds of asphalt tiles: fiberglass and natural. Natural shingles are composed of a wood base that is covered with asphalt. Fiberglass shingles has a strengthened fiberglass mat that is covered with asphalt together with some mineral fillers. Organic shingles are heavier than fiberglass since they consist of 40 percent more asphalt.

Both types of asphalt tiles are embedded with ceramic grains. These ceramic grains give a couple of functions. First, they avoid the premature deterioration of asphalt from over-exposure to UV rays. Second, they offer visual value, since they enable the asphalt tile to preserve its color.

Asphalt tiles can be found in two major designs: three-tab shingles and architectural shingles. Three-tab asphalt shingles are distinguished by the cutouts that can be noticed on their long lesser ledge. A three-tab tile will look like three separate tiles when set up. This asphalt shingle design has been available for several years and is the best-selling asphalt tile design.

Rather than cutouts, architectural asphalt shingles you can buy roofing Fairfax contractors have a reduced portion finished with an added coating of asphalt. This layer produces the contoured look that the tile takes its name from. Though they are very durable, architectural shingles are not advised for low-sloped roofing systems since they are prone to strong winds.

Asphalt tiles installed by specialists of roofing Northern Virginia citizens prefer can be made to resemble slate, wood shakes and tiles. Color choices are even more diverse. Depending on your personal choice or the style of your residence, you can typically discover asphalt tile colors that have different shades of gray. They even come in beige, reddish to moderate brown, dark brown, and in hues of green and blue.

No matter what type of asphalt tile you choose to buy, you should have a life time guarantee for your tile purchase. Keep in mind though, that the warranty for roofing Sterling service providers install can be voided if the asphalt shingles are not correctly put in. Kendra Wilkinson Defends Jessica Simpson Figure: Leave Her Alone!

Let's face it: Jessica Simpson has seen slimmer days.

But the singer does have a valid, adorable excuse. His name is Maxwell Drew Johnson.

And Kendra Wilkinson is simply aghast that folks are giving Simpson a hard time for not yet having lost all the weight she gained carrying her son to term.

Kendra Wilkinson in Sin CityJessica Simpson in Toronto

"That just breaks my heart," Wilkinson tells Yahoo! OMG of the criticism leveled at Simpson's figure. "I feel for her. I was in the same boat. People just need to mind their own business. That's a woman who just gave birth.

""Her first priority right now is her child. Her first priority is not losing the weight. You should be proud of her for that. A lot of people just dump their kids off at nannies and lose the weight overnight. We should all be proud of her for being real and taking control and making priorities."

That may be the most intelligent thing Kendra has ever said.

Simpson, meanwhile, is profiting mightily off her body. She recently signed a $4 million deal with Weight Watchers.

Dogs and cats help babies' health, study finds

Fido the dog and Ginger the cat need not worry about being replaced by a new baby ? in fact, they could be helping parents raise healthier children.

A new study finds that children who lived with dogs or cats during their first year of life got sick less frequently than kids from pet-free zones. The study, published in Monday's edition of the journal Pediatrics, provides fresh evidence for the counterintuitive notion that an overly clean environment may not be ideal for babies.

Sharing a home with a pet may be an early form of cross-training for the body's defense systems. Previous research has shown that owning a cat or dog was associated with less risk of gastroenteritis in young children.

Studies also suggest that the dirt ? and microbes ? brought indoors by pets could bolster the communities of helpful bacteria, yeast and other microscopic creatures that live in a developing child's body.

For instance, a paper presented last month at a meeting of the American Society for Microbiology showed that mice fed dust from homes with dogs were less likely than other mice to contract respiratory syncytial virus, which is thought to play a role in the development of childhood asthma. In addition, the composition of microbes in their guts was significantly different from that of mice that were not exposed to doggy dust.

For the new study, European researchers tracked the health of 397 Finnish children born between September 2002 and May 2005. When the infants were 9 weeks old, parents began keeping weekly diaries to document a number of indicators of their children's health, including runny noses, coughs and ear infections. Parents also noted when their babies were given antibiotics. When the children celebrated their first birthdays, the parents were asked to complete a questionnaire.

Overall, the researchers found that cats and dogs were linked to a reduced incidence of various types of illness. The effect was stronger for dogs than for cats: Babies who lived with dogs were 31% more likely to be in good health than their counterparts who didn't, and babies with cats had a 6% advantage over those without feline family members.

The children with pet dogs were 44% less likely to develop ear infections and 29% less likely to have used antibiotics during their first year, the report said.

Here's where the plot thickened: Although living with a cat or dog was correlated with good health, the benefit was biggest when those pets weren't around the house very much.

In cat-owning households, babies whose cats were indoors more than 16 hours a day were healthy 70.8% of the time. But in homes where the cat was inside for less than six hours a day, babies were healthy 78.2% of the time. For the sake of comparison, young children who lived in cat-free zones were healthy 66.1% of the time.

A similar pattern held for dogs: Kids with homebody canines were healthy 72.2% of the time, and that figure rose to 75.7% for children whose dogs spent fewer than six hours indoors each day. In dogless households, babies were healthy 64.8% of the time.

The researchers offered a possible explanation for the puzzling pattern: Pets that spent more time outdoors brought more dirt into their homes, giving babies more opportunities to encounter it. That exposure could have caused their immune systems to mature faster than they would have otherwise, they wrote.

Until now, studies on the ways pets influence human health have largely focused on allergies, not illness, said Dr. Danelle Fisher, vice chair of pediatrics atSt. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, who wasn't involved in the study.

"It's more support in a growing body of evidence that exposure to pets early in life can stimulate the immune system to do a better job of fighting off infection," Fisher said.

The new findings could help assuage parents-to-be who worry about the health consequences of exposing their infant to a pet.

"What I always tell them is this: It's actually very helpful to have a cat or dog around because we tend to see less allergies," Fisher said. "And now I can tell them we've even seen less chance of upper respiratory infection in the first year of life."
