For some feathered dinosaurs, bigger not necessarily better

Thursday, November 29, 2012

Every kid knows that giant carnivores like Tyrannosaurus rex dominated the Cretaceous period, but they weren't the only big guys in town. Giant plant-eating theropods ? close relatives of both T. rex and today's birds ? also lived and thrived alongside their meat-eating cousins. Now researchers have started looking at why dinosaurs that abandoned meat in favor of vegetarian diets got so big, and their results may call conventional wisdom about plant-eaters and body size into question.

Scientists have theorized that bigger was better when it came to plant eaters, because larger digestive tracts would allow dinosaurs to maximize the nutrition they could extract from high-fiber, low-calorie food. Therefore, natural selection may have favored increasing body sizes in groups of animals that went meatless.

Three groups of giant feathered theropods from the Cretaceous period seemed to follow that rule of thumb ? the biggest specimens were also the plant-eaters. Lindsay Zanno, research assistant professor of biology at North Carolina State University and director of the Paleontology & Geology Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, and Peter Makovicky, associate curator of paleontology at the Field Museum in Chicago, decided to see if diet was the determining factor when it came to size. Makovicky notes that "Having three closely related lineages of dinosaurs adapting to herbivory over the same geological time span and showing evidence of increasing size provided a near perfect test case."

Zanno and Makovicky estimated body mass for 47 extinct species of feathered dinosaur, representing three major groups that abandoned a strictly meat-eating diet ? ornithomimosaurs ("bird-mimics"), oviraptorosaurs ("egg-thieves"), and the bizarre therizinosaurs ("scythe-lizards"). Most species in these lineages also possessed a toothless beak, three-toed feet, and shorter tails than your average dinosaur, making them look a lot like modern birds.

All three groups evolved gigantic proportions: the largest oviraptorosaur weighed over 7,000 pounds, and the biggest ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs topped out at over 13,000 pounds. "The largest feathered dinosaurs were more than 100 times more massive than your average person," says Zanno. "The reality is that for most of us, it is downright difficult to imagine a feathered animal of gigantic proportions."

The researchers also found that average body mass did increase in these groups over time (on average, the earliest members were smallest and the last species to evolve were among the largest). But this simple correlation didn't indicate whether large size was an evolutionary advantage.

To test whether these groups were being driven to get bigger by natural selection, Zanno and Makovicky fitted different evolutionary models to the data, looking to see which model best described the patterns of body mass from ancestor species to descendant species. They found that these theropod groups were experimenting with different body masses as they evolved, with some getting bigger, while others were getting smaller. In short, there was no clear-cut drive to get big ? size seemed to provide no overwhelming advantage during the evolution of these animals.

The researchers' results appear in Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

"Results of our study don't rule out diet as affecting body mass, but do seem to indicate that fluctuating environmental conditions over time were trumping the benefit of becoming a giant," Zanno says. "The long and short of it is that for plant-eating theropods, bigger wasn't always better."

"Where resources permitted, these animals could get as big as elephants, but that clearly was not the case in all environments and time periods," says Makovicky. "Factors such as resource abundance and competition with other herbivores likely played a more significant role." He added that uneven sampling in the fossil record, such as preferential preservation of smaller species in earlier time periods and larger species in later ones, could also impact the results.

Green Blog: Susan Rice Has Stake in Keystone Pipeline

Should Susan E. Rice, the United Nations ambassador, be nominated for Secretary of State, one issue likely to arise during confirmation hearings, aside from the lethal attack on the American Mission in Benghazi, Libya, is her large stock holdings in TransCanada, the company seeking an American permit to build the proposed the Keystone XL pipeline.

According to financial disclosure documents filed in May, Ms. Rice owns from $300,000 to $600,000 worth of stock in the Canadian pipeline company (See Page 5).

Because the State Department oversees transboundary pipelines, the Secretary of State is ultimately responsible for determining whether Keystone XL should go forward.

But her stock holdings in TransCanada,? first reported by the Sunlight Foundation and Onearth.org, an environmental publication affiliated with the Natural Resources Defense Council, would surely complicate the issue.

According to the United States Office of Government Ethics, federal law requires executive branch employees to be recused from matters ?if it would have a direct and predictable effect on the employee?s own financial interests or on certain financial interests that are treated as the employee?s own.?

The ethics agency also advises that employees may be directed to divest financial investments if they pose a substantial conflict.

Last year, Ms. Rice and her husband earned between $7,500 and $25,000 on their investments in TransCanada, according to financial disclosure forms (which require officials to provide only a range of investments and earnings).

?We need a full team at the State Department, including the secretary, to be free of any conflicts of interest when it comes to tar sands and TransCanada,? said Susan Casey-Lefkowitz of the Natural Resources Defense Council, which opposes Keystone XL.

?I think she would need to sell her stock, and we would fully expect her to do that.?

Ms. Rice has not been nominated by President Obama to head the State Department, but she is said to be among his top choices.

Mr. Obama recently leapt to Ms. Rice?s defense as Congressional Republicans ramped up criticism of her handling of the attack on American diplomats in Benghazi, Libya.

Ms. Rice?s office at the United States Mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment on her stock holdings. And TransCanada said it was not in a position to speak about potential nominees.

?That is a matter for the president of the United States,? said Grady Semmens, a spokesman for the company.

Ms. Rice, whose husband is Canadian, also has stock in other Canadian energy companies whose pipeline projects would fall under the jurisdiction of the State Department.

Federal filings show that Ms. Rice and her husband own at least $1.5 million worth of holdings in Enbridge, which transports Canadian oil sands crude through the United States. The company was heavily criticized by environmental groups after a 2010 pipeline spill dumped more than 840,000 gallons of oil near Marshall, Mich., leading to the closure of a 39-mile stretch of the Kalamazoo River.

The fate of the Keystone XL, which would ship oil sands crude from Alberta to the Gulf Coast, is expected to be one of the most controversial decisions for the new Secretary of State.

Amazon takes Maps API out of beta, cautiously steps out of Google's shadow

If Amazon has its way, Google Maps on your Kindle Fire won't be the default option for much longer. Back in September, the online retail giant introduced a beta version of its Amazon Maps API to see if it could go the Apple route by fleshing out its own maps platform. Now it's ready to take the API out of beta after several months of testing and a lot of developer interest -- Hipmunk, Evernote, Trulia and Zillow have already integrated it into their Kindle Fire apps. The API currently features interactive maps and customized overlays, and is now a part of the Amazon Mobile App SDK. It's early days yet for the mapping service and we're sure it doesn't have the bells and whistles of the one from Mountain View, but this does mean a further step toward differentiation from the Big Goog. Let's just hope this turns out better than iOS6 Maps and no one comes to regret it.

Home Truths ? Self assessment of property tax won't be ...

irishtimes.com - Posted: November 29, 2012 @ 12:48 pm

Edel Morgan

Will detective work be required to establish values?

There are no houses on the market in the housing estate where I live? . When I key in the name of? my road? on? the property price register I find that there has been one? transaction? in the past 11 months where a house sold for ?190,000 but they give no details as to whether the house has the same number of bedrooms as mine, what the condition of the house is or if it? has a? large back garden.? However two houses around the corner sold in September, one for ?230,000 and one for ?265,000. Again the register provides no detail as to the finer points of these houses. So if I have to? self-assess the value of my house for the property tax,? is it up to me to scope these houses out, quiz the owners? or the neighbours as to the number of bedrooms and compare and contrast them to my own? Well I have a life? as it happens and won?t be doing any of these things.

In theory self assessment of the property tax sounds so simple. It is speculated that the value of the home will go up in bands of ?50,000 and it will be calculated by self-assessment. Householders will pay the rate attached to the nearest ?50,000 band, so a house worth ?220,000 will pay the rate for all houses between ?200,000 and ?250,000 of ?500. The bands go up in ?50,000s . However, anyone who knows anything about property knows it won?t be that straightforward. There are all sorts of anomalies and grey areas that will make it difficult for homeowners to know how much their house is worth.

Say for example you live on a road or in a development where there haven?t been any houses sold in recent months or even years? How do you even begin to value your property?? Or you live in an area where there have been a few sporadic sales but there has been no consistency in terms of the selling prices. This could happen where there are different house types on a road or where there?s been a receiver/bank sale and a? property sold for a rock bottom price. An estate agent told me yesterday that he sold a five bed house in a well regarded development in Dublin 9 for ?170,000. Obviously the vendor wanted a quick sale because this is way below what the house is worth, even in the current market. But if , for example, this was the only recent sale in the development at the time of self assessment for the property tax, would other residents in the area be well within their rights to value their houses in the ?150,000-?200,000 price band also?

There are warnings of penalties for not paying the right amount but in this confused market, it might be hard to prove that a homeowner has under-declared . Another factor, particularly in Dublin, is that there are so few houses on the market so there will be many areas where a clear valuation is not easily deduced. There?s still? an element of trial and error with? the asking prices that estate agents affix to properties,? the property price register is still in its infancy and there has been a dearth of transactions. It has been suggested that homeowners may have to have their homes professionally valued and if that is the case,? it will be interesting to see how even a valuer would go about determining how much a property is worth in many areas where there have been no recent transactions. And if homeowners will be able to appeal if they don?t agree with the valuation or if the valuation turns out to be incorrect in the light of subsequent transactions?.whatever happens it is bound to be tricky.

NATO visits southeast Turkey for Patriot missiles

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? A NATO team assessing possible sites for Patriot missiles to protect Turkey's border with Syria inspected military installations Wednesday in southeast Turkey, the state-run news agency reported.

NATO member Turkey asked allies to deploy the missiles as a defense against any aerial attack from Syria after mortar rounds and shells from Syria struck Turkish territory, killing five people.

Syria is believed to have several hundred ballistic surface-to-surface missiles capable of carrying chemical warheads.

The NATO team visited military facilities in Malatya province, some 200 kilometers (124 miles) from the Syrian border, the Anadolu Agency reported. The province is already home to an early warning radar that is part of NATO's missile defense system, which is capable of countering ballistic missile threats from Iran.

The visit came as the alliance said it would "favorably examine" Turkey's request for the air defense missiles but was awaiting the team's report on where to base them.

NATO spokeswoman Carmen Romero said the NATO team was expected to finish its work in the next few days and would feed its proposals to NATO's military authorities.

"This recommendation is a key element in the Council's decision-making process," she said, in reference to the North Atlantic Council, the alliance's governing body that is made up of the ambassadors of all its 28 members.

Romero said "allies with available Patriots have also made clear their intention to augment Turkey's defenses, subject to national processes."

Germany, the Netherlands and the U.S. have the advanced PAC-3 model Patriots that Turkey wants to intercept ballistic missiles.

Once NATO and the national parliaments in Germany and the Netherlands approve the deployment of the Patriots, it will probably take at least another month before they become operational. Due to the complexity and size of the Patriot batteries ? including their radars, command-and-control centers, communications and support facilities ? they cannot be flown quickly by air to Turkey and will probably have to travel by sea, officials said.

The deployment of the Patriots is also likely to be discussed at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Russia, meanwhile, has come out against the Patriot missile deployment, saying that basing the missiles so close to the border could worsen the bloodshed in Syria.

Syria is reported to have an array of artillery rockets, as well as short- and medium-range missiles ? including Soviet-built SS-21 Scarabs and Scud-B missiles ? in its arsenal. The latter are capable of carrying chemical warheads.

Syria's conflict started 20 months ago as an uprising against President Bashar Assad, whose family has ruled the country for four decades. It quickly morphed into a civil war, with rebels taking up arms to fight back against a bloody crackdown by the government. According to activists, at least 40,000 people have been killed in Syria since March 2011.

CSN: Any sympathy left for Andy Reid?

November 27, 2012, 2:00 pm

gonzalez_byline_new.png
After the Eagles stumbled to yet another bad loss ? this time at home against the lowly Carolina Panthers ? Andy Reid made another walk of shame. He entered the press room at Lincoln Financial Field from stage right and addressed the media. The coach absorbed shot after verbal shot in the form of questions discharged without regret. It might as well have been a firing squad.

Jeffrey Lurie said 8-8 wouldn?t be good enough this season. Does that mean you?re gone?

Has Lurie assured you that you will be the coach for the remainder of the year?

How do you prevent the young players from developing a losing mentality?

Have you ever dealt with anything like this at any point in your career?

Someone should have offered him a cigarette and a blindfold.

While all this went down, Reid stood in front of the usual product placement. Behind him, there was a black sheet stamped with the Eagles logo and ?Ricoh,? one of the team?s corporate sponsors. Ricoh?s tagline ? two simple, appropriate words given the circumstances ? were also printed on the backdrop: ?Imagine. Change.?

Eagles fans everywhere have no doubt imagined change. And they will finally get it. This is it for Reid. This will be his last year as the head coach. It has to be. Everyone from Rittenhouse to Reading knows it.

What an inglorious end to his time in town.

Is there any sympathy for Reid considering his ineffable plight? Or are Philadelphians past that point? Has the overwhelming desire to dismiss the coach numbed the fan base to the pain and embarrassment he must feel?

The Eagles are 3-8. They are tied for last place in the NFC. They have lost seven straight games. The last time they had such a long losing streak was back in 1994. Rich Kotite, who is remembered as a bungler who couldn?t keep his play chart dry, was the head coach. That?s how horrible things have gotten for Reid. His coaching career now parallels, in small part, the disastrous conclusion to Kotite?s time here.

Reid is a far better coach than Kotite ever hoped to be. Whatever you think of Reid, that much is indisputable. The man has done a lot of good things for the organization.

And yet it is impossible to deny to that he is ultimately responsible for the issues that continue to plague this team week after unacceptable week. The underperforming players. The overmatched coaches. The curious, ineffective schemes. They can all be traced back to Reid. So much has gone wrong. It has all deteriorated so quickly. What happened?

?If I had that answer for you, it would have already been done,? Reid said at the NovaCare Complex on Monday.

He sounded deflated ? has for a while now. Like the rest of the area, Reid seems resigned to his fate. He is an obviously prideful man who is enduring a protracted public humiliation. It is hard to watch, even if the situation is a result of his actions and inactions.

Things have completely crumbled for Reid and the Eagles. You look around the league and it?s hard to believe how far the team has fallen. The Eagles? record lumps them with the likes of Carolina and Cleveland, Jacksonville and Kansas City. That is awful company. Call it the Club of the Clueless. The Eagles are members.

?Right now it?s not enough,? Reid said about the team?s effort. ?I can?t stand here and tell you it?s enough.?

Their performance has obviously not been enough. Not even close. It hasn?t been for some time.

At best, if they win all their remaining games ? a laughable fantasy ? they will finish with a .500 record. What an unceremonious and ignominious conclusion to Reid?s tour of duty in Philadelphia.

?I have the upmost respect for Andy,? Brent Celek said after the Panthers game. ?I think he is one of the greatest coaches around. I think we, as players, need to step up and start doing our jobs. I feel bad for him, because he is in a horrible situation in a town that is critical, and rightly so. If I were a fan, I would be mad too.?

There are plenty of people who are angry. They call radio shows and grouse on barstools and shake their fists without end. They have had their pitchforks sharpened for years, and now they get to skewer Reid repeatedly. With each game, the mob grows. There?s no stopping it.

Nothing lasts forever. The end had to come eventually for Reid. But who could have imagined it going down like this? Who could have anticipated that he would not only get kicked while he?s down but also stomped flat?

He makes a healthy salary. He?s a professional. But, at the moment, is there anyone in sports whom you?d rather be less than Andy Reid?

The Most Effective Ways To Execute E-Mail Marketing | Bill McIntosh

E-mail marketing is a technique that all Internet marketers should perfect if they hope to maximize their efforts and earnings. No other online marketing technique helps you establish authority and trust faster and more effectively than e-mail marketing. As long as you follow these simple steps and hints and as long as you are vigilant and you strive never to give up, you will soon be performing and earning just like an e-mail marketing expert.

?

E-mail marketing Goals

Take a look at your inbox. Do you have any emails from businesses or other marketers? Unless you are very protective of your e-mail address, you probably have more than a few opened right now. You may have an e-mail from your local pet store letting you know that they have dog food on sale. You may have one from an online marketer who is trying to sell you an e-book or you may have one from a local restaurant trying to get you to come in this weekend for a free dessert.

No matter where all of those e-mails originate from, they all have one goal: to get you to come in or otherwise spend with that particular business. Not all e-mail marketing messages are sales-related. Some offer tips, updates, hints, news and other information that is targeted to the overall niche and interests of the subscribers, but ultimately the very purpose of e-mail marketing is to increase business and the bottom line.

?

Study E-Mails that Come In

If you want to learn how something is done, it always pays to watch the experts in action. Pay attention to a few of those e-mail marketing messages coming in. If the company is large, such as a mega-store chain or a restaurant chain, there are likely MBAs and other highly-educated marketing professionals behind those messages. Pay attention to how they are executed and take plenty of notes. You never know what you?ll learn.

?

Building a List

You can?t send out any e-mail marketing messages until you have a list of subscribers. There are various ways you can go about collecting contact information from your prospects and customers.

  • Ask for the Information: The next time you do business with a client or customer, ask for their e-mail address and add it to your e-mail marketing subscriber list.
  • Build a Squeeze Page: A squeeze page is a single page online that is designed to capture valuable information from your web visitors. In this case, we want a name and an e-mail address. It is usually common practice to offer a free gift in exchange for the information you want. This could be an e-report that offers targeted tips your prospects can use, a video series, a discount on your latest products or services, or whatever else you feel like giving away. The more valuable the free offer, the more e-mail marketing subscribers you?ll earn.
  • Be Creative: Think outside of the box and think of ways to get your hands on the email addresses of your primary audience. You have many tools available, including social media, video marketing, e-report marketing and much more. Use all of these to your advantage and get as many names and e-mail addresses as you can so that you can build a list a mile long.

?

E-Mail Marketing Platform

At first glance, all of this list building and communicating with your list subscribers can seem rather daunting. The entire process of e-mail marketing will appear much easier when you find an e-mail marketing platform to handle all the heavy work for you.

There are both paid and free platforms available, but all of them will offer the basic functionality. The functions most basic users are privy to usually include list building, list management, the plugging in of pre-programmed e-mail messages (called autoresponders) and split testing. For right now, we are only going to focus on list building and the messages. Once you have that down, the rest is downhill.

?

Autoresponders

When you have your e-mail marketing platform chosen, you will want to create an opt-in form using the platform?s opt-in creator. Place this opt-in form on your website and your subscribers will be able to join your list automatically. You can also manually submit e-mail addresses as you receive them.

Once you start building a list, you will want to create three primary autoresponder messages. These include:

  1. The Thank You autoresponder: This is the page that your subscribers are sent to after they opt-in. You should thank your subscribers for their submission and let them know that you will never spam them or abuse their information. You should also let them know what to expect. Let them know how often you?ll be e-mailing them and what they?ll get in each e-mail.
  2. The Download: this is the download page where your subscribers will receive their e-book or e-report, or whatever else you have decided to give away free in exchange for the subscribers information.
  3. The first E-mail: Your e-mails should educate and inform, first and foremost. You are attempting to build a reputation as the authority in your niche and you?re trying to establish trust between you and the subscriber. Don?t become a salesperson right off the bat. Help your subscribers achieve their goals and they will reward you.

If you start off the business relationship by appearing helpful and concerned with your subscribers? primary goals as they relate to your niche, your e-mail marketing open-rates will accelerate and your overall revenue will explode.

Right now you might be asking how you make money from e-mail marketing. Once you establish yourself as the authority, once you establish trust and once you have a good chain of autoresponders started, you can start recommending your products and services. If you?ve done your job, your audience will appreciate your suggestions and will jump on whatever offer you provide.

Never abuse your audience?s trust, only suggest products and services you believe in and never stop those autoresponders from going out. That is how the experts engage in e-mail marketing. Emulate their efforts and see just how effective this form of marketing can be.

Attain Your Dreams By Following These Self Improvement Tips ...

An enormous step is admitting to yourself that there is a need for improvement. Here are some self-help strategies that will give you ideas on what you could try.

Even if you feel the need to change and grow, you will not do so until you choose to. Change is a highly personal and difficult choice that requires a real commitment.

If you see yourself failing to reach goals, then you need to analyze the situation to figure out what the problem is. Look for resources related to your issues and ask your friends about their struggles. You might need to be more realistic or gain the proper information you need to succeed.

Make a decision about where you want to go in life and stick with it. Pondering an ideal life without taking the action to make it a reality will inevitably lead to nothing. You need to step up and pursue your goals to make them really happen.

Because you allow yourself to be more vulnerable when pursuing personal development, failures can be especially hard to handle. But, failure doesn?t have to be something bad if you can learn from it and gain experience from it. It shows you what your strengths and your weaknesses are. Think of a failure as a discovery about yourself, perhaps as an adjustment to reality.

Select one important part of yourself that you would like to improve, and focus on that. You may wish to improve several different things about yourself, but you are more likely to succeed if you stick to one self-improvement project at a time. This also helps the changes stick because it is easier to maintain one new habit compared to ten.

You really have to put yourself first in order to be of any help to anyone else, and accept that you will never be able to please everyone. This doesn?t mean that you should only think of yourself, but in some cases, you really need to put yourself first. If what you?re doing is true to both your ethics and yourself, then you can be healthier with your path to self improvement.

Get rid of every part of your life that is disorganized. You will feel accomplished and your mind will feel clearer. The stress of living in disorganization will also disappear. Having everything in its own place instills a calming energy.

Your mental health can be directly influenced by the physical heath of your body. It is imperative to eat a well-balanced diet, and to get some form of exercise every day. If you have a strong body, you will have a strong mind.

Be the best you can be at what you are doing! Follow your passion to the greatest possible aspirations. You will never be number one at anything, but we can try to be great. Do your best to become a leader in your industry, as it will give your self-esteem a boost.

Higher Level

You should always want a higher level of self restraint when working hard for personal development. Learn to exercise restraint over the desires of the flesh to achieve a higher level of self control. Beat bad habits like gluttony, jealousy, lust or greed. Controlling these desires will prevent negative impacts on your body and spirit.

Use these tips and keep track of changes to your thoughts and feelings. Understand that it can?t all be accomplished at once.

Most Ontario adults are drinking responsibly, and fewer are smoking or using illicit substances -- but several areas of concern were found in the 2011 CAMH Monitor survey of substance use trends, released November 28 by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

"More young adults are reporting that they drive within an hour of using cannabis -- even more than those who report drinking and driving," says Dr. Robert Mann, CAMH Senior Scientist and lead researcher. "Yet the risks of doing so are significant." Nine per cent of 18- to 29-year-olds report driving after cannabis use, versus six per cent in this age range who report drinking two or more drinks and driving.

The 2011 CAMH Monitor, which included 3,039 adults aged 18 or older from across Ontario, is the longest ongoing survey of adult substance use in Canada.

Cannabis users are also aging, the survey found. Those aged 50 or older now account for 16 per cent of all adult users of cannabis, which is five times higher than in 1977.

Alcohol Use

Most Ontario adults report drinking alcohol in the past year (81 per cent), but the majority does not drink excessively. Alcohol use is a concern when there are harmful drinking patterns, which occur in certain groups.

"Women are drinking more than in the past," says Dr. Mann. "Several key drinking indicators show an increase among women." Six per cent of women reported a pattern of drinking daily in 2011, compared to three percent in 1998. About eight per cent of women were drinking in ways that were hazardous or harmful, up from five per cent in 1998.

"Binge drinking also remains high, particularly among 18- to 29-year olds," notes Dr. Mann. "Overall, nine per cent of Ontario drinkers consume five or more drinks at one time each week, which represents 691,700 people." The survey also showed that the average number of drinks consumed weekly has increased, as has the number of drinkers overall who report daily drinking.

Non-medical Prescription Opioid Use

There was some good news, with the reduction in non-medical use of prescription opioids, which has been a concern in recent years. Use dropped by half between 2010 and 2011, down to four per cent in 2011.

This decline may be the result of Ontario's Narcotics Strategy as well as other policy measures to reduce the non-medical use of these powerful, addictive drugs, Dr. Mann suggests.

Mental Health

One in seven Ontario adults (17 per cent) report elevated psychological distress, with rates highest among those aged 18 to 29. "This type of distress can reduce people's ability to function effectively socially and emotionally," says Dr. Mann.

Seven per cent of adults reported using an anxiety medication, and seven per cent took a depression medication. These medications were most likely to be used by those aged 40 to 49, and in the case of antidepressants, by women in this age range.

Smoking

Smoking rates have been declining steadily for years in Ontario. Currently 15 per cent, or 1.4 million Ontarians, say they are smokers. However, this rate may be leveling off, says Dr. Mann. "The 15 per cent remains three times higher than the Cancer Care Ontario target of five per cent."

Mix masters: Scientists image the molecular structure of polymer blends

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Using an enhanced form of "chemical microscopy" developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), researchers there have shown that they can peer into the structure of blended polymers, resolving details of the molecular arrangement at sub-micrometer levels. The capability has important implications for the design of industrially important polymers like the polyethylene blends used to repair aging waterlines.

Polyethylene is one of the most widely produced and used polymers in the world. It's used in many familiar applications -- milk bottles, for instance -- but the NIST research is motivated by a more critical application: water pipes. Aging water infrastructure is a significant national issue. The Environmental Protection Agency has reported that in the United States there are over 240,000 water main breaks per year, leaks wasting 1.7 trillion gallons of water per year, and costs to taxpayers of $2.6 billion per year.

Polyethylene pipes are one potential solution. They're relatively inexpensive to make and install, and they have negligible corrosion issues and a predicted service life of up to a century under ideal conditions. Unfortunately, current test standards do not address service life under field conditions, especially for fusion joints in the pipes. This uncertainty has slowed the use of large diameter polyethylene pipe.

The industry standard for polyethylene pipes is a blend of two different forms of the polymer, a medium-weight, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and a high molecular weight "linear low-density polyethylene" (LLDPE). Combining the two, says NIST materials scientist Young Jong Lee, dramatically improves the toughness, strength and resistance to fracture of the polymer.

The problem for quantitative service-life prediction is understanding exactly why that is. Developing the necessary predictive models has been hindered by knowing just how the HDPE and LLDPE molecules blend together. They are so close chemically that X-ray or electron imaging -- the usual go-to techniques for molecular structure -- can't readily distinguish them.

The NIST team is using a variation of Raman spectroscopy, which can distinguish different chemical species -- and measure how much of each -- by analyzing the frequencies associated with the different vibrational modes of each molecule. The exact mix of these frequencies is an extremely discriminating "fingerprint" for any particular molecule without help of fluorescence labeling. Raman spectroscopy using focused laser beams has been used as a chemical microscope, able to detail the structure of complex objects by mapping the chemical composition at each point in a three-dimensional space.

The NIST instrument, called "BCARS" (broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering) microscopy, uses a pair of lasers to gather Raman data at least 10 times faster than other Raman imaging methods, a critical feature because of the vast amount of data that must be gathered to understand such highly structured blend systems. The extra trick is to substitute deuterium ("heavy hydrogen") for hydrogen atoms in the HDPE component. The deuterium strongly shifts the Raman spectrum, making it easy to distinguish the two components. By controlling the polarization of the light, the technique provides additional details on the local crystal orientation of molecules in the polymer. The images show, for example, the formation of microscopic spherical regions of partial crystallization with the LLDPE more concentrated towards the center.

"This is a fast, three-dimensional chemical imaging technique that's particularly useful for studying microstructures of polymeric materials," says Lee. The group currently is using BCARS to find the correlation between microscopic structures with characteristics of deformation and thermal fusion on polyethylene pipes.

Thyroid problems linked to irregular heart rhythm

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? People with an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) carry a greater risk of developing irregular heart rhythm (known as atrial fibrillation) than those with normal thyroid function, finds a study published on bmj.com today.

As such, the researchers suggest there should be an increased focus on atrial fibrillation in patients with raised thyroid function.

Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland makes too much thyroxine (thyroid hormone), causing many of the body's functions to speed up. About 1 in 100 women and 1 in 1,000 men develop hyperthyroidism at some stage of their life and it can happen at any age.

It is well known that overt hyperthyroidism is associated with atrial fibrillation, but it's still not clear whether milder (subclinical) hyperthyroidism has a similar effect. Data on the risk of atrial fibrillation in patients with an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) is also limited.

So a team of researchers in Denmark set out to examine the risk of atrial fibrillation in relation to the whole spectrum of thyroid disease in a large group of patients.

Using nationwide registries, they identified 586,460 patients who had consulted a general practitioner in Copenhagen from 2000 to 2010 and had a thyroid function blood test. This measures the amount of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) circulating in the blood. In people with hyperthyroidism the level of TSH will usually be low, whereas in people with hypothyroidism the level of TSH will usually be high.

During an average five and a half years follow-up, 17,154 (3%) of patients had a diagnosis of a first atrial fibrillation, 53% of whom were women.

Compared to patients with normal thyroid function, the risk of atrial fibrillation increased with decreasing levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone. For example, patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism had a 30% increased risk of atrial fibrillation, while patients with high-normal thyroid function had a 12% increased risk.

In contrast, hypothyroidism was associated with a lower risk of atrial fibrillation.

The authors stress that, although atrial fibrillation was closely associated with thyroid activity, they cannot prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship. However, they say their study is "the first to assess the association between the whole spectrum of thyroid disease and the subsequent risk of atrial fibrillation in a population of primary care patients."

They conclude: "These results support long term screening for atrial fibrillation in patients with thyroid disease."

Perils of investing in mutual funds directly | Firstpost

By Srikanth Meenakshi

Starting January 1, 2013, mutual fund investors in India will be able to invest in the so-called ?direct plans? of mutual fund schemes. These plans will be available when a person invests directly in a mutual fund company, without going through an advisor or an investment service.

The benefit will be that these plans will charge a lower expense ratio compared with the regular plans. Although the actual quantum of difference is not known at this time, speculation is that it would be between half a percent to one percent for equity funds, and less than half a percent for debt and liquid funds.

Should investors opt for these plans? Over the long run, will they stand to gain from choosing this method of investments? What will be the implications of doing so? To answer these questions, it is necessary to look at some current facts and analyse them logically.

Importance of choosing good funds

The universe of investible funds is large ? just in the equity funds space, there are upwards of 200 funds to choose from. Including debt funds, the total set of funds available for investments is upwards of 1,500. A regular investor needs not more than 7-10 funds in their portfolio even if they are investing for multiple time-frames, financial goals etc.

Given this, the danger of choosing a wrong fund is more dire than choosing a more cost-effective ?mode? of investing. Looking at data, we can see that over the past periods of investments, there are significant gulfs between the best and the worst performing funds.

For a 10-year period, the gap is 23 percent per year! For a five-year period, it is more than 28 percent (see images below)! In fact, an investor over the last five years, would have lost money significantly with imprudent choices rather than making a reasonable, if relatively low, returns.

Source: FundsIndia.com

Source: FundsIndia.com

Obviously, in this situation, choosing good funds makes a bigger impact than cost savings of a few fractions of a percentage point. But does advice really make a difference enabling investors to choose good funds? To try and answer this question, again, we turned to data.

Value of advice

It is not as if this avenue of investment has been newly made available to investors. They have always had the option of investing directly with the mutual fund companies without the help of any investment service. There is even a mutual fund company ? Quantum AMC ? that gets most of its inflows directly from investors.

However, as per current industry statistics, only a very small fraction of investments come through in this direct route. Even if one looks at only retail investments that are predominantly in equity funds, less than 7-8% of the assets under management have come directly from the investors to the mutual fund schemes.

We were curious to see if there is a correlation between getting advice and investing in good schemes. Although one cannot get exact statistics on the performance of advised investments versus direct investments, we found a couple of data points that strongly support the hypothesis that a majority of investors today have done well with their investments.

If one looks at the five-year performance of all diversified equity funds, there have been 163 funds in this period. Of these 117, or 65% have beaten their respective benchmarks. However, the total AUM of these 65% of funds is significantly more than 65% of the AUM that is spread out among all the 163 funds. In fact, it is as high as 91%!

If one looks at the same figures for a three-year time frame, the numbers are similar ? 74% of the funds that have beaten the benchmark?s performance have 90% of the total AUM.

Though it does not prove it, this strongly suggests that retail investors today, who are overwhelmingly investing through advisory services, have done well with respect to their investment choices. They have invested in funds that have performed well rather than in lesser funds by a significant margin.

Can Investors do it themselves?

This leads us to the third question. Is choosing funds that hard? Can the investors make these choices themselves? On this question, it is tough to find hard statistics to answer this question one way or the other. However, going by anecdotal evidence and experience, I would be inclined to answer the question in the negative.

What Is the True Marketing Value of Guest Blogging? | Business 2 ...

Content marketing has been on the tip of most marketers? tongues the last two or so years, and with good reason. It?s number one way to maximize the number of keywords driving traffic, improve visibility across all inbound channels and build or grow a brand?s community. However, the explanation above doesn?t necessarily address marketers? questions concerning specific content marketing tactics like guest blogging.

Guest BloggingWhat is Guest Blogging?

Guest blogging is not the same as content syndication or curation. Guest blogging occurs when an author creates original content for another relevant web property. Brands can be the recipient of a guest post or the contributor to another brand?s blog.

Benefits to Being a Guest Blog Post Contributor

Every blog, in some form or fashion, represents a community. Communities are formed around a cause or topic. Its members consume, comment on, share and evangelize the content that resides on the blog. Not all communities are created equal and can vary in size, scope and fervor.

When contributing to another blog, it?s critical to respect the cause or topic of the community. Guest posts should be relevant and prudent while providing value, and a helpful call to action for conversion. Over time, this process will slowly draft new community members into the contributor?s online community. Below are seven benefits to being a blog contributor.

  • Exposure to a new audiences and communities
  • Natural and prudent link building
  • Organic social sharing by new people
  • Algorithmic brand signals
  • Diversification of AuthorRank
  • Incremental growth in traffic, leads or customers
  • Referral traffic

Referral Traffic

Guest blogging that respects the cause or topic of a community and provides prudent calls to action can see high performing conversion rates. The above graphic shows average conversion rates for referral traffic at 15 percent. Other channels generally hover in the 1 percent to 3 percent range for conversions. Guest blogging is one of the most efficient lead capture or conversion tactics on the Internet today.

Benefits of Being the Recipient of Guest Posts

According to the Content Marketing Institute?s 2013 B2B Content Marketing Benchmarks Report, 64 percent of content marketers cite producing enough content as a challenge. This means most blogs will be receptive to publishing relevant guest posts.

Guest authors and the brands they represent have a vested interest in promoting their content. This promotion exposes the publishing web property to new social audiences. Each time a guest post is published, it?s likely to attract new community members that previously resided outside the recipient?s sphere of content influence.

If a guest contributor is savvy, they will take ownership of their written content via Google?s authorship attribution. Authors who do this are establishing their expertise around a certain subject matter directly with Google. This has many positive search engine benefits for the publisher of the contributor?s content. Other benefits include:

  • Exposure to a new audiences and communities
  • Organic social sharing by new people
  • Brand alignment with attributed (by Google) authors
  • Incremental growth in traffic, leads or customers
  • Encourages other authors and brands to contribute
  • Fosters community and collaboration

Publishing and contributing guest blog posts leads to many valuable content marketing outcomes and positively affects all inbound channels. It helps brands foster and grow their online communities and further aligns them with industry experts.

People go to the Internet to solve problems or be entertained. Businesses are in the business of solving peoples? problems. As a result, perceived industry expertise across the Internet should be valued and coveted. Guest blogging is one of the many content marketing tactics that grows and expands perceived industry expertise.

5 Smart Tips For Throwing A Family Holiday - Business Insider

A lot of preparation goes into throwing a holiday party in your home, especially when your family is invited.?

Here are five of the smartest party planning tips we've come across this holiday season.

  • Mix and match your plates and silverware: Mixing and matching is in, according to The LA Times, so embrace it! If you don't have a full set of matching plates and glasses, don't stress. Just alternate settings by seat so the table seems balanced.?

  • Make a signature holiday cocktail: Most people actually don't like having endless drink options at a party, according to Marie Claire. Guests will gladly try something new, especially when it's right in front of them. So skip the full bar, and stock up on wine, beer, and one premade cocktail.?

  • When someone offers to bring something, say yes: Your family probably has a few signature favorites during the holidays. If Aunt Joan's homemade pumpkin pie is the best, let her bake it and bring it when she offers. It's a time-tested favorite, and cuts down on your prep time.

  • Obey the one-bite rule: House Beautiful suggests keeping appetizers to the size of a single bite. That way guests will be able to keep their hands free and sample everything you serve.

Don't forget to serve water: The last thing anyone wants is a drunken family holiday fight. Serving water to keep guests from getting too tipsy, suggests Apartment Therapy.

4 Dead, Including 2 Children, In Northern California Car Crash

SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? Two children were among four people killed when a car collided with a minivan on a rural Northern California highway, authorities said.

The wreck came as a Toyota Prius crossed the center line on Highway 50 near Placerville on Saturday night and struck a Toyota Sienna minivan "broadside," said California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer John Frizzell. The crash also left five people injured.

Three people in the Prius ? a 39-year-old man driving the car, a woman and a child ? were killed in the crash, Frizzell said. Another child in the car suffered moderate injuries. Three of the victims who died lived in the San Francisco Bay area. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Of the five people in the minivan, a 4-year-old girl was killed, Frizzell said. She died after being taken to a hospital. The four others ? the 35-year-old female driver, a 51-year-old man and two 1-year-olds suffered minor to moderate injuries. By late Sunday afternoon no names had been released.

Weather conditions at the time of the crash were clear.

"We don't know what caused the Prius to cross into oncoming traffic," Frizzell said Sunday. "There's an infinite number of possibilities."

Investigators have pulled computers from both vehicles that would indicate how fast they were going at the time of the crash, but collecting that information would probably take days, Frizzell said.

The highway where the crash took place is just outside of Placerville, about 45 miles east of Sacramento. The highway has two lanes, with minor to moderate curves, and with a speed limit of 65 miles per hour, Frizzell said.

Bangladesh garment factory fire kills 120

DHAKA (Reuters) - A fire swept through a garment factory on the outskirts of Bangladesh's capital, killing at least 120 people, the chief of the fire brigade said on Sunday, in the worst accident for the booming industry in recent years.

The fire at the nine-story factory in the Ashulia industrial belt started on the ground floor late on Saturday and quickly spread, trapping hundreds of workers.

"This morning we have recovered 120 dead bodies and the death toll could rise," Abu Nayeem Mohammad Shahidullah, director general of the fire brigade, told reporters.

Bangladesh has around 4,500 garment factories that make clothes for brands including Tesco, Wal-Mart, JC Penney, H&M, Marks & Spencer, Kohl's and Carrefour.

Witnesses said the workers, mostly women, ran for safety as the fire engulfed the plant, but were unable to come out through narrow exits.

"Many jumped out from the windows and were injured, or died on the spot," Milon, a resident, said

The fire leapt high into the sky and could be seen from miles (kms) away.

Bangladesh is the world's biggest exporter of clothing after China, with garments making up 80 percent of its $24 billion annual exports.

But safety standards at the factories are poor and not enforced strictly, causing scores of accidents each year.

"We are appalled to see the charred bodies coming out of the factory since last night. It was an endless stream," Milon said.

Saturday's fire was the worst in years and rescuers and police said the death count may surpass any previous toll.

Earlier this year, more than 300 factories near the capital were shut for almost a week as workers demanded higher wages and better working conditions.

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? At least 112 people were killed in a fire that raced through a multi-story garment factory just outside of Bangladesh's capital, an official said Sunday.

The blaze broke out at the seven-story factory operated by Tazreen Fashions late Saturday. By Sunday morning, firefighters had recovered 100 bodies, fire department Operations Director Maj. Mohammad Mahbub told The Associated Press.

He said another 12 people who had suffered injuries after jumping from the building to escape the fire later died at hospitals. The death toll could rise as the search for victims was continuing, he said.

Local media reported that up to 124 people were killed in the fire. The cause of the blaze was not immediately clear, and authorities have ordered an investigation.

Bangladesh has some 4,000 garment factories, many without proper safety measures. The country annually earns about $20 billion from exports of garment products, mainly to the United States and Europe.

Relatives of the factory workers were frantically looking for their loved ones. Sabina Yasmine said she saw the body of her daughter-in-law, who died in the fire, but had no trace of her son, who also worked at the factory.

"Oh, Allah, where's my soul? Where's my son?" wailed Yasmine, who works at another factory in the area. "I want the factory owner to be hanged. For him, many have died, many have gone."

Mahbub said firefighters recovered 69 bodies from the second floor of the factory alone. He said most of the victims had been trapped inside the factory, located just outside of Dhaka, with no emergency exits leading outside the building.

Many workers who had taken shelter on the roof of the factory were rescued, but firefighters were unable to save those who were trapped inside, Mahbub said.

He said the fire broke out on the ground floor, which was used as a warehouse, and spread quickly to the upper floors.

"The factory had three staircases, and all of them were down through the ground floor," Mahbub said. "So the workers could not come out when the fire engulfed the building."

"Had there been at least one emergency exit through outside the factory, the casualties would have been much lower," he said.

Many of the victims were burned beyond recognition. The recovered bodies were kept in rows on the premise of a nearby school.

Army soldiers and paramilitary border guards were deployed to help police keep the situation under control as thousands of onlookers and anxious relatives of the factory workers gathered at the scene, Mahbub said. He would not say how many people were still missing.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed shock at the loss of so many lives in the blaze and asked authorities to conduct thorough search-and-rescue operations.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association said it would stand by the victims' families.

Bangladesh's garment factories make clothes for brands including Wal-Mart, JC Penney, H&M, Marks & Spencer, Carrefour and Tesco.

Separately, a flyover under construction fell onto a busy market, leaving at least 14 people dead including three construction workers in southeastern city of Chittagong, an official said Sunday.

Local fire official Abdul Mannan said the concrete structure collapsed on Saturday night, and authorities recovered the bodies by Sunday morning from under the debris in the second-largest city after Dhaka.
